Playing Bayonetta… reminds me of what I don’t like about God of War

Despite buying the game on the day of release, I didn’t get to put too much time into Bayonetta as I was obsessed with Darksiders and then Super Street Fighter ate my time along with work. I just recently picked it back up and I’m having a lot pure, outright fun.

Now everything isn’t perfect as the game likes to keep throwing out batshit insane mythos babble like it’s going out of style, but I enjoy that babble for what it is, a fun and wacky ride through mangled Christian mythos with a very slight serious undertone. The game also suffers from a case of throwing out too many action sequences that are just to be watched and usually far and away over the top from what you can actually do to the point where I keep expecting to be able to play the game, getting disappointed every time. But when the cutscenes aren’t playing and I am, I am having a fucking blast, which makes up for the time spent waiting for a cutscene to end.

The gameplay is nice and open ended, while being very tight at the same time with a constant reason to be doing new things and focusing on dodging, etc. The extra weapons are, as per the DMC creed, USEFUL. Enemies drop weapons that add yet another layer of attack skills from a pole dancing spin to chainsawing an enemy in half. All the while the game doesn’t forget it’s a game or that it’s got some serious gaming pedigree behind it (Henshin a go go baby!) which keeps the whole experience grounded overall. Hell, the game is so fun and not punishing on normal, that I actually want to go back on hard and try to go for the Platinum ranks… haven’t done that since Blast Corps. (btw, where the fuck is that on XBLA?) Bayonetta is quite possibly the opposite of the flaying tedium that can be God of War, a game that heavily ripped off Bayonetta’s predecessor, Devil May Cry. The DMC, series and Platinum/Clover’s other games are huge reasons why I’ve never found much to be found in the gaming publics love of God of War.

Besides the fact that God of War is a fucking rip off in it’s own right, the game also tries to be this “mature”, “gritty” and “serious” take on Greek mythology with uninspired artwork, characters, story (SERIOUSLY? a game based on greek mythos with a boring story? that should be a fucking crime) and overly one sided flailing back and forth gameplay mechanic. I can probably talk all day about how the blades of chaos are so terribly boring to use, that I get excited in God of War games to get new weapons that ALWAYS DISAPPOINT (fists of Hercules had SO MUCH POTENTIAL that was wasted), so I won’t go into that here. I’ll just leave it at that I can’t believe such a one note game can create 5 sequels, the newest of which selling about a million units on ONE system in a month, and yet Bayonetta has hit bargain bin status already. A fucking shame.
