The fear of death in games

This matter is a very serious one to me, one I’d love to tackle myself one day. I realize that it is very difficult mechanic to implement on a number of levels. Creating a game world where the player doesn’t just simply feel that death in general of both the player and of enemies is marginal can be very hard without going to some wide extremes which can be a huge turn off to players and potential players. Then there’s the issue of potentially killing or simply disposing of a protagonist that can leave a game with a sense of lacking identity, as unless a suitable resolution is presented to explain the events that have taken place and to give closure, things will just end up feeling cheap.
